St. Petersburg residents are invited to celebrate the ‘Burg and share what makes the city special to them at “Keep St. Pete Special,” a free community event hosted by Preserve the ‘Burg and held at the St. Petersburg Shuffleboard Club.
The November 8 event will focus on four “cornerstones” of St. Pete’s culture that give the city its special character and charm: the arts, historic preservation, and locally-owned, independent businesses.
Roundhouse Creative, Preserve the ‘Burg’s media partner, will have a camera crew onsite to interview residents about what makes St. Pete special and what qualities they feel are worth preserving. While the event is non-political, the recorded interviews will be used to show elected officials and community leaders why it’s important to protect the cultural characteristics that give St. Pete its special sense of place.
Attendees will also have the opportunity to show St. Pete their love by leaving “heart bombs,” or heart-shaped notes, on the walls of the shuffleboard club.
“St. Petersburg’s vibrant arts community, focus on historic preservation, support of locally owned businesses and charming traditional neighborhoods all play significant roles in making this city unlike any other,” said Jeff Schorr, Chair of the Keep St. Pete Special celebration. “The city is growing and changing, and it’s important that we preserve the things we love most about it.”
In line with celebrating all things that make St. Pete great, the event will feature local art, music, beer and food, as well as a variety of family-friendly activities. Community partners Keep St. Pete Local, the St. Petersburg Shuffleboard Club, Keep St. Pete LIT and CONA will participate.
Local artists Justin Wagher and Jennifer Kosharek will perform live mural painting during the event. The Mural is sponsored by ARTicles Gallery and Black Crow Coffee Co. There will also be live art by local potters, fiber artists, painters and glass blowers.
Local restaurants will have food for purchase. Coffee will be available from Black Crow Coffee Co and kombucha from Mother Kombucha. A variety of local craft brews have been donated by local breweries Green Bench Brewing Co., Cycle Brewing, 3 Daughters Brewing, Pinellas Ale Works and Flying Boat Brewing.
Lounge Cat will play live music, and the shuffleboard courts will be open for free play.
The free event will be held at 559 Mirror Lake Dr. N, from 6 to 9 p.m. Registration is not necessary, but RSVPs on Facebook are appreciated. View link for more event information and the 2017 Keep St. Pete Special video.
